Pastel on Pastel mat paper

Red browed finches are regular residents here in our Grampians National Park and they especially love our native garden with its fountain and bathing facilities. I never tire of watching these gorgeous little characters which I call fire tails (a common alternative name).

This pastel painting which I just completed was an extremely challenging piece but a couple of weeks of determined and dogged concentration finally got me to the happy end result I had envisioned.

Soft pastel can be very difficult to get detail with but after using pastel for 40 years now I think I may be getting to understand how to work with the medium. I love especially that the pastels I use are completely lightfast and archival quality, so clients who invest in my art can rest assured the work will hold up for many many years.
