Crested pigeons are relative new comers to the Grampians National Park here in the Southern part of Australia with the first arrivals reaching here roughly 30 years back after expanding their usual range from further North. I well remember the day a birding friend rang me in a rush of excitement to tell me crested pigeons were walking up his driveway. Cresties are now very common in our area and much further South (although not yet in Tasmania) as they continue to adapt to new habitats produced by land clearance and artificial water supply.

These friendly little fellas are often feeding at our back door along with the finches and rosellas. When these pigeons take flight their special wing feathers make a characteristic whistling sound which some biologists believe is a danger warning to other nearby pigeons.

The pair depicted in this pastel painting are resting quietly and undisturbed on the top of our old back gate while the early sun warms through their ruffled feathers. How I love their gentle presence here every day.
