Introduction of foreign species to a country is often deemed harmful and it could be said that introducing red hot poker plants from Africa to Australia may be a problem. In damp and sensitive bushland areas they can become very invasive but these flowers were blooming safely enclosed in a large public garden. To the opportunistic and remarkably adaptable New Holland honeyeaters they are simply a generous and available source of nectar. So, in the end we can say what invades in one set of circumstances can be of benefit in others. From my point of view as an artist there is no down side… just delightful colour and rhythm.
