A splash of crimson – crimson rosella

‘A splash of crimson – crimson rosella’
Pastel - drawing on colourfix paper
35 x 50 cm

Here in the Grampians National Park we created what we call our Zen garden two years ago. I am delighted that most of the local birdlife have now come to think of it as a regular port of call whether for drinking or bathing in hotter weather. One of the first birds to befriend us here was this gorgeous crimson rosella which (in a fit of inspiration) we named Rosie. The biting frosts of still autumn mornings mean the weeping Japanese maple quickly colours up before shedding its leaves and in the ear tingling, brittle cold of early daylight the picture is simply too beautiful to resist painting. How joyful I am that I share my life with such wonderful wild creatures
