'Parenthood - Black swans'
Pastel - drawing on Colourfix paper
61 x 32cm
I grew up in the town of Ballarat which is fortunate to have a huge lake around which the whole town revolves. Lake Wendouree is a haven for wildlife of all sorts and especially the waterbirds such as the Australian Black swan which is the only wholly black swan in the world. As a child the highlight of my week would be a visit to the lake to hand feed the swans who were as tall as me! As I grew I also learned the delights of kayaking into the reed beds further out in the centre of the water where the swans nested....sometimes getting a brief window into their private world where they raised their tiny cygnets.
