Mighty silverback - Lowland gorilla.
90x120cm Coloured charcoal engraving, and drawing on board.
Weighing up to 400 pounds the fully mature Silverback is a very imposing creature. Its fearsome displays of forest smashing and chest thumping in defence of its family have lead to the idea that they are highly dangerous. This is in truth far from the facts. The Silverback is definitely chief protector of the group but still makes a regular and gentle baby sitter and playmate for the younger members of the close knit family while the females are able to forage for food. Mostly vegetarian in diet they utilise over 200 species of plants and also fruit at different times of year will eat termites and even ants.
