' Delicate Balance - Australian Kestrel'
Pastel - drawing on Supertooth paper 58 x 43cm
One of my favourite raptors is the Australian kestrel. This diminutive predator weighs on average 172 grams and yet it is a very effective hunter of smaller reptiles, frogs, mice etc. Its flying ability is second to none and I have observed them hovering motionless in a gale howling over a ridge top upon which I struggled to remain standing. Although a physicist explained to me the mechanics of how it happens as far as I am concerned this pocket rocket is a miracle and nothing less.
The bird depicted in this painting is one I met on a recent field trip to Kangaroo Island in South Australia....one of my very favourite places on Earth.
